About Caroline Routh and ARTeMODE

Her works progress slowly, like the growth of a leaf or a seashell, unit by unit, stitch by stitch, in order to create beauty that evokes feelings of pleasure and connection.

My earliest studies were in painting and print-making at Mount Allison Univerisity in New Brunswick, Moore College of Art in Philadelphia, and Mexico's Instituto Allende, San Miguel. I developed a strong graphic sense which took me from print-making to a growing interest in weaving while in Mexico.

Some years later, in the middle of a long teaching career, I took a year's sabbatical at the Ontario College of Art, Toronto, where I returned to design subjects and print-making. At Seneca College in Toronto I taught subjects such as Design 101, Illustration & Graphics, and History of Fashion, until 1997. I also authored and illustrated In Style: 100 Years of Canadian Women's Fashions, Stoddart, 1993.

Now, from my studio in the woods outside Owen Sound, ON, I am an "emerging" artist—creating fibrearts in tapestry-crochet. (Baskets, vessels, sculptured works, wall-hangings, hats, cushions, and bags.) When I'm not working with a crochet hook, I am holding a pencil, making colourful drawings, floral illustrations, and fantasy landscapes.
